Purpose

Know whether the sea is moving, even when you are not watching it.

Forecasts describe what might happen. Ceonda observes what is happening along the coast.

It is designed to detect changes that may arrive unexpectedly: a clean residual swell, a sudden increase in movement, or waves beginning to reach the coast while nobody is continuously checking the sea.

How it works

It follows change, not a single observation.

Ceonda uses a machine-learning and computer-vision model trained on years of coastal observations.

At regular intervals, it compares each observation with previous ones and checks whether the same change appears at several points along the coast. This helps distinguish an isolated variation from movement that grows and continues over time.

The model operates during the day and, when the signal is readable, at night as well. If the information is insufficient, it does not force an answer.

Why

It began with missed waves.

After returning to Italy following almost a decade in Portuguese-speaking countries, I had lost many of the instincts that once helped me understand whether it was a good day to surf.

Sometimes work kept me busy, and only in the evening would I realise that I had missed good conditions, perhaps after seeing friends' photos on Facebook, Instagram or surf groups.

After too many missed opportunities, I began aggregating the near-real-time data available in the area to follow what was happening along the coast.

The first source of marine data I relied on was discontinued soon afterwards. I did not abandon the idea: I continued observing webcams and collecting information at regular intervals for two years.

That history led to a classifier designed to recognise signals useful to surfers and notify them when the sea changes quickly or interesting conditions begin to form.

Today the model is still being optimised, while some Ceonda features are already running.
